Research and Fiscal Analysis for the Future of Texas

The Comptroller’s office helps keep you informed by performing complex research and fiscal analysis on issues facing the state of Texas. Last March, we conducted a study on the cost of obesity to private sector businesses. We found that, if we Texans do not change how we eat and exercise, the result may be a staggering $15.8 billion in additional annual costs to businesses by the year 2025 -- a burden that our economy clearly cannot afford. (You can see this and all of our other reports at: www.window.state.tx.us/publications.)

This study helped us to understand exactly what this epidemic means to Texas. The Comptroller's office partnered with the Texas Education Agency in 2007 to launch Texas Fitness Now, a $20 million grant program aimed at increasing physical education, fitness, and nutrition in economically disadvantaged middle schools.

We recently released "The Energy Report," an extensive look at our energy industry and a comprehensive assessment of the possible consequences of developing various energy resources. The energy industry has always been and continues to be a major contributor to our state’s economy. In order to maintain strong economic growth and continue to be a leader in this vital industry, we must use resources more efficiently and expand energy diversity. This report is an overview of the many new energy resources Texas can use to meet its future energy demands. "The Energy Report" is now available at www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/energy/.
