EL PASO - Texas Comptroller Susan Combs today handed out ceremonial checks worth more than $115,000 to a dozen government agencies and companies.
The state has more than $2 billion in unclaimed accounts - often money from long-forgotten bank accounts or security deposits. Combs was in El Paso as part of her department¹s effort to get Texans to visit the state's online database to look for money that belongs to them.

El Paso County Commissioner Veronica Escobar accepted a check for $57,377.64 from Combs for the county. El Paso Mayor John Cook received $37,894.89 for the city.
Each government had the money in accounts that had been forgotten about. Combs said more than 1,200 El Pasoans have received a total of $1.14 million this year from the unclaimed accounts.
Millions more are to be had. Combs said the top 100 El Paso accounts have about $2.6 million, including one account worth more than $97,000.
