Corsicana — Texans have $2 billion in unclaimed property held in trust by the state, and Navarro County residents will have a chance to claim their fair share when the Texas Comptroller’s office hosts a special presentation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Corsicana Government Center, 200 N. 12th St.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs will be in Corsicana for that event.

“The top 100 unclaimed properties in Corsicana are worth $650,000,” said Allen Spelce, spokesman for the comptroller’s office. “The largest single unclaimed property is $106,000.”

The presentation will show how the state is helping individuals and businesses claim the money, but staffers will also be on hand with computers to help people search for their property, and start the claims process.

While in Corsicana, the comptroller will be presenting checks for unclaimed money to the city and county, just to name two recipients.

“It’s money the city didn’t know they had coming, or were unable to obtain,” Spelce said. “It may have required a lot of steps or hoops to get to the money. Just about every city we go to we find some money tucked away they didn’t know about. Since the comptroller took over the office we’ve been expediting as many of these as possible.”

Last year, the comptroller’s office returned $147 million in formerly unclaimed money to Texans. People who wish to search for their money may go to www.ClaimItTexas.org, or attend the event on Thursday to have a staffer conduct a search on their behalf.

While in Corsicana, the comptroller will also be honoring the City of Corsicana, Kerens ISD and Fairfield ISD for their open records policies, and attending a fundraiser for the Navarro County Republican Party.
