This has been an extraordinary year. Texas saw a significant rebound in economic activity, a drop in unemployment, and a welcome mat laid out for employers and enterprises that has been widely used. The net influx of non-Texans has been very invigorating for our economy and supports what we have said all along: get government out of the way, unleash the private sector, and good things follow.

The Comptroller’s office is working hard to achieve cost savings, root out fraud and employ sound and commonsense business practices. In 2007, our agency was asked to focus on statewide purchasing with the goal of achieving real cost savings by volume. Since that time, we have saved our state agencies more than $100.3M in purchasing items such as highway road materials, office equipment and supplies, traffic signals, and travel services.

A Medicaid Crisis is Coming

In the past, the federal entitlement program, Medicaid, was usually expanded by either economic events, which placed individuals in poorer circumstances on Medicaid, or by federal expansion of eligibility. The Obama administration, under the Affordable Care Act, proposed adding 17 million Americans to the rolls, with about 3.2 million of those in Texas. The new costs are staggering and put tremendous pressure on our state’s budget.

This Labor Day

On this Labor Day, my thoughts are with both the hardworking men and women who have built the best state economy in the nation, as well as our friends and neighbors looking to join the ranks of the employed.

In a nation overwhelmed with 23 million people under-employed, out of work, or who have stopped looking for work – we are truly fortunate and blessed to live in Texas, the land of opportunity.
